Edgewood Energy 80 MW Simple Cycle Peaking Project

CLIENT: PENNSYLVANIA POWER & LIGHT

LOCATION: EDGEWOOD, NEW YORK

IN-SERVICE DATE: JULY 2002

SCOPE: GENERAL CONTRACTOR

Phoenix was selected to construct this simple cycle power plant. The project was constructed simultaneously along with the Shoreham Energy Project. Both were started in February of 2002 and placed in commercial operation in July of 2002.

Major equipment installation for these sites included:

  • Two gas fired LM‐6000 PC Sprint GE Turbine Generators

  • Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) units on each

  • One Generator Step Up (GSU) transformer at each location

  • Gas Compression Equipment (Edgewood)

Additional work included construction of the mechanical, electrical. service and water injection buildings and a diked oil tank farm, as well as a 42‐foot‐high sound wall.

Electricity generated by the Edgewood Energy Plant is purchased by the Long Island Power Authority to serve the need for additional electrical demand on Long Island.

The project was constructed on a fast‐track basis (built as it was being designed) with a very aggressive schedule. Communication, teamwork and timely dissemination of information to the field was essential for the success of this project.
