University of Maryland 26 MW CHP, College Park, Maryland

A new CHP plant was constructed at The University of Maryland to address the problem aging and unreliable utility infrastructure and emissions issues. The project included the installation of a 26 MW dual-fuel fired Combined Heat and Power Plant along with upgrades to the underground Steam and Chilled Water Distribution Systems and the on-campus Electrical Distribution System.

Upgrades included:

  • Replacement of existing coal/oil fired boilers with 2 new dual-fuel Nuovo Pignone 10.5 MW gas turbines

  • New HRSGs with SCR for NOx control

  • 5 MW back-pressure steam turbine generator operating in combined cycle mode.

  • Two new 500-ton steam driven chillers.
